Stargate SG1 is a military type science fiction television series that premiered in 1997 and was based upon the movie Stargate from 1994. The show featured on Showtime on cable networks, but eventually the show moved and found a permanent home on the Sci Fi channel and this is where the last five seasons were broadcast.
The plot of Stargate SG1 is based around the movie and this is the first Stargate as there were many more to follow as this series was popular in Australia and also the United Kingdom. The Stargate team goes to other planets and they use the Stargate to travel to these foreign places. They are seeking out alien populations and looking for those they can build allies with.
Richard Dean Anderson plays Jack O’Neill who is an Air Force Colonel and this role was played by Kurt Russell in the movie. Michael Shanks plays Daniel Jackson who is an Egyptologist whose interest in the Pyramids can be a bit out of this world. The astrophysicist on the show is played by a female, Amanda Tapping as Sam Carter who is also an Air Force Captain. She is later promoted to major and then Lieutenant Colonel.
Christopher Judge plays Teal’c who is a Jaffa alien. He eventually leads his race of aliens to freedom and even though this is his original goal, he still stays on the show until the last season. He is a integral part of the team and the humans learn to trust this alien and he is considered a high ranking addition to this team of Stargate members.
Most of the costumes in the Stargate series consist of military type uniforms; there are some extravagant makeup and costume design involved in the alien scenes. There are also many special effects needed to make the crew look battered and bruised when they are in battle and this requires a special makeup artist.
Stargate SG1 has collaborated with the military to ensure that there is an accurate portrayal of these military characters. This has helped the show’s success and has added to a more believable story line. There are some military based shows that are a very inaccurate portrayal of the military and Stargate has worked hard to overcome this stereotype. While filming ended in 2007, this is a series that is still very popular nationally and there are many Stargate spin offs that have been created.
